LONDON: Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin cut short his loan spell with Liverpool on Friday to rejoin German champions Borussia Dortmund, also on loan, until the end of the season.
Sahin endured a disappointing time at Anfield following his pre-season switch from Madrid and made just 12 appearances for Brendan Rodgers' side.
With his first-team prospects limited on Merseyside, Turkey international Sahin has agreed to return to Dortmund, where the 24-year-old began his career before moving to Madrid in 2011.
"Liverpool Football Club have confirmed an agreement has been reached with Real Madrid allowing midfielder Nuri Sahin's loan deal to end, so he can join another club with immediate effect," a statement on Liverpool's website confirmed.
"Sahin arrived at Anfield for a season-long stay in August 2012, but will now spend the rest of the campaign with Borussia Dortmund, the side with whom he won the 2011 German championship.
"Everybody at LFC would like to wish Nuri all the best for the future."
Sahin was voted the Bundesliga's player of the year at the end of the 2010-11 season, when he inspired Dortmund to their first German league title since 2002.
He left to join Real that year, signing a contract until 2017 with the Spanish club, but struggled to break into Jose Mourinho's team and was sent on a season-long loan to Liverpool in August.
The 24-year-old, who reportedly alienated Rodgers by complaining that he was being used out of position, was keen to be reunited with Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp and is expected to link up with his new team-mates at their winter training camp.
