Bomb drama at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences: Reds plant IED inside dead jawan

RANCHI: Doctors and security forces were taken aback on Thursday when they found a powerful can bomb with a small solar plate to charge the battery of the improvised explosive device (IED) inside the stomach of a CRPF jawan killed in Monday's Maoists ambush in the jungles of Latehar, 250km from the state capital.

Bomb squads were called when doctors conducting the autopsy at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) found metallic objects surgically inserted inside the abdomen of Babulal Patel, the 24-year-old fallen CRPF jawan. Over 20 bomb disposal squad members took more four hours to defuse the bomb. Patel, a constable in CRPF's 112 battalion, hailed from the Nababganj locality in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh

IG (special branch) and police spokesperson S N Pradhan said Maoists have medical experts in their ranks who could have surgically implanted the explosive in the body. The Maoists had cut open the stomach and also stitched it after inserting the explosives. Dr Binay Kumar, assistant professor at RIMS forensic medicine department, said: "Apart from the IED, detonator batteries and a small solar panel were fished out from the abdomen." He said several bullets were pumped into the body of the jawan. "The IED weighted 2.75kg with the container," said Kumar, who conducted the post-mortem.

RIMS director Tulsi Mahto said the abdominal area of the grown-up human being can easily hold objects weighing 5kg - even some tumours weigh more than that. "The intestine is pushed to the sides when some hard objects are inserted. It can also be stitched back easily," added Mahto. The RIMS director added that.

A jawan who fought the Maoists in Latehar jungles said: "Patel was married last March. He even called up his family members from the battlefield when he fell to the ground after he sustained four bullets." The CRPF is preparing to send his body to his hometown. On Tuesday two civilians were ripped to pieces in dense Karmatiya jungles when they went to pick up the dead bodies of jawans from the jungles with policemen.

The Maoists had ambushed three companies of CRPF and a Jharkhand Jaguar company when they were combing the Karmatiya jungles on Monday morning. As per police records, 10 jawans and three civilians were killed in the Maoist ambush. Unconfirmed reports, however, say that over 17 persons - including two Maoists - have died in the incident.
