Nitin Gadkari to stay BJP boss as hunt for success fails

NEW DELHI: BJP chief Nitin Gadkari is all set to get his second three-year term as the party president, with the BJP leadership and RSS brass settling on his name after a long futile search to find a successor.

The party is expected to complete the formalities and make an announcement by end-January, in a decision which guarantees RSS upper hand in the saffron party's matters. However, many feel it could even hasten the ascendancy of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi in organizational affairs.

There were many party seniors — from Yashwant Sinha to L K Advani among a good number of others — who had campaigned against a fresh term for Gadkari in light of disclosures of financial irregularities about the Purti Group that he co-promoted. However, lack of consensus within BJP on who should succeed him tilted the scales in favour of Gadkari in the final lap.

Considering that a second term for Gadkari had looked virtually impossible after disclosures of irregularities in his companies linked to him hit the headlines last year, the prospect of a second term may appear to be almost a political miracle. In fact, his mentors in the RSS had also looked resigned to his ouster but held out fearing that that his removal in the face of charges will be interpreted as confirmation of wrongdoing on the part of their favourite swaymsevak from Nagpur. Gadkari partisans have refuted charges of irregularities, arguing that these are mostly of technical nature and considering that the BJP chief severed his links with the Purti Group, should be pinned on him.

Sources in the party said that his colleagues have already acquiesced to the decision, although quite a few of them fear that persisting with Gadkari may leave the party vulnerable to attacks from its rivals, particularly Congress.

The lead UPA player swiftly seized upon the charges against Gadkari to accuse BJP of hypocrisy over corruption, many in the BJP suspect that the government agencies which probed the charges against Purti Group but have been remarkably coy about the findings may have conserved their fire power for a more politically opportune time.

In his second term as the party chief, Gadkari would be in-charge of the main Opposition party when the next Lok Sabha polls will be held.

Gadkari was made the party chief in December 2009 following the tenure of Rajnath Singh when infighting in the party's top brass had peaked. Just as now, since the BJP seniors had failed to take a call on who would head the party among them, opening the door for RSS to depute Gadkari.

Although the nod for a second term should guarantee that Sangh retained its decisive say in party affairs, it can also serve to enhance Modi's already-formidable appeal among cadre. Modi — ever the favourite with the ranks — has been looming large since his victory in Gujarat polls and because of the increasing belief in the core constituency that he, with his plan of high growth rates, effective governance and clean image, should be the party's mascot for the next parliamentary polls.
