Contingency fund increased to tackle drought in Maharashtra

MUMBAI: Maharashtra government approved a hike of Rs 400 crore on Friday in the state contingency fund for overcoming water and fodder scarcity in various areas.

At present, the fund is capped at Rs 150 crore; the state cabinet today approved a rise to Rs 550 crore.

The increase was a temporary measure for drought relief, officials said. The funds will be used for drinking water supply through tankers, cattle camps, etc.

An ordinance will be issued because the budget session of the state legislature will be held only in March.

The state's proposed industrial policy was tabled before the cabinet today, but no discussion took place, sources said.

As per the draft policy, an investment of Rs five lakh crore and generation of 25 lakh employment opportunities is expected in the near future. The focus would be on boosting the industrial development in backward regions of Vidarbha and Marathwada.

These regions would get a subsidy of Rs one per unit for industrial electricity, apart from concessions regarding interest rate, amnesty scheme for sick units, etc.
